Thoughts on the Blogosphere

Tuesday, June 7th, 2005

I was recently informed that my blog is boring. I’ll see what I can do to spice it up a bit. This post probably won’t help much, but it’s what is on my mind.

The following blogs/feeds are out. I find them completely unreadable.

The content is great, mind you, it’s just the volume is ridiculous. I find it completely demoralizing to see that I have, say, 833 unread items. That just makes the feed sit unread longer.

Overflowing RSS Feeds

The perfect feed should have between one post a week and one post a day. The most annoying blogs seem to have dozens of posts a day.

I know, I know - I could subscribe to only the categories of most interest. But usually the categories do not present a good taxonomy of sub-topics.

Does anyone have suggestions for low to moderate volume feeds on technology or eco-friendly news?

Upgraded to WP-1.5

I continue to be very pleased with WordPress and just completed the painless upgrade to v 1.5.

Looking forward to the more powerful comment-spam handling. Probably has additional hidden treasures.

Switched to WordPress

Wednesday, December 1st, 2004

Welcome to WordPress. I just installed this sucker to replace MovableType. You may have noticed that I've been getting deluged with blog-spam. So I needed to upgrade and it was time to switch to Free Software.

Only trick to install was that I had to edit import-mt.php to get my old blog entries.

Self-hosted!

Saturday, October 18th, 2003

I finally got this blog up and running on my own server. I moved all my old entries over from the Radio blog.

I tried several blog softwares before trying Movable Type (MT). I’m not completely happy with MT because of the license and its nature as a Perl CGI, but it will do for now. May try others in the future, but I want to get back online first.

For the curious, I tried:

  • TDiary (overly simple, mostly documented in Japanese)
  • Geeklog (too complicated, not very good docs, terrible install)
  • Blosxom (didn’t get me up and running fast enough, plus the mod_blosxom FreeBSD port wasn’t working)

The one I didn’t try was Greymatter. It looks somewhat less polished and it is also Perl CGI, but I may test it out anyway.

If anyone knows other good software, please let me know.

Begin the Bloguine

Sunday, August 10th, 2003

Well, here we go - the initial foray into the blogosphere as encouraged by Rod, Morgan, and . Hello World.

Within a few weeks, I hope to be self-hosted. But for now, a Radio free trial will have to do.
