First tractor pull

Sunday, October 19th, 2003

For a while now, people have been asking me if I’ve noticed much different in my new homestate. Well yesterday, we went to the NC State Fair in Raleigh.

Most things at the fair are like any other fair - giant turkey legs, buckets of french fries, cotton candy, sketchy rides. A few things were pretty interesting - they had many more old time (early 1800s) craft booths where people were performing their craft on site. They were knitting elaborate deroative pieces, carving wooden muskets, spinning and weaving rugs, and making silohouette portraits. This seemed more historically cultural than what I’m used to in the upper midwest. Perhaps that’s the way it is in one of the 13 original colonies.

But then we went to the tractor pull, which brought it all into perspective.

Self-hosted!

I finally got this blog up and running on my own server. I moved all my old entries over from the Radio blog.

I tried several blog softwares before trying Movable Type (MT). I’m not completely happy with MT because of the license and its nature as a Perl CGI, but it will do for now. May try others in the future, but I want to get back online first.

For the curious, I tried:

  • TDiary (overly simple, mostly documented in Japanese)
  • Geeklog (too complicated, not very good docs, terrible install)
  • Blosxom (didn’t get me up and running fast enough, plus the mod_blosxom FreeBSD port wasn’t working)

The one I didn’t try was Greymatter. It looks somewhat less polished and it is also Perl CGI, but I may test it out anyway.

If anyone knows other good software, please let me know.
