Basketball craziness

Saturday, January 17th, 2004

I like watching basketball. Christy really likes watching basketball.

I’ve never had a team to cheer for. From the never-quite-get-going Timberwolves to the scandal-ridden Gophers to the post-MJ Bulls… now finally at Carolina, where basketball is a BIG DEAL.

We just got back from a home game - Carolina vs. #1-rated UConn. Carolina won 86-83 and the place was rocking. The whole stadium literally shakes from the crowd’s noise. Students flooded the floor after the game. Undergrads shout along with the cheerleaders.

This is definitely a difference in the South versus the North - they’re not embarassed to have school spirit.

Portupgrade on FreeBSD

Tuesday, January 13th, 2004

Portupgrade is the best way for managing software packages in FreeBSD. However, it’s not entirely obvious what the process should be for maintaining the ports tree.

Here’s the steps I’ve found to be most useful:

  1. cvsup -g -L 2 -h cvsuphost.us.freebsd.org ports-supfile
  2. portsdb -Uu
  3. pkgdb -aF

Then you can see what is available for upgrade by using:
portversion -v > myportstatus.txt, then view the myportstatus.txt file.
