Well last night was a pretty big treat in Chapel Hill, NC.

We watched the game from a local pub and gritted our teeth throughout the second half.

It was pretty incredible - I doubt I’ll ever again live in the hometown of an NCAA champion team.

While we didn’t join the frenzied crowd out on Franklin Street, we could certainly hear them even a few miles away at our apartment.

As I’ve noted before, there is something special and simultaneously weird about the centrality of college sports to the local cultural identity. Really, the entire town participates in this event. You cannot live here without getting at least mildly wrapped up. It is part of the vernacular and a common bond amongst every person in the area. Us Yankees get the heeby-jeebies because sports are what bind these people together. But we don’t have a better working alternative either.
